BA 1988 Olivet College, PhD 1994 Michigan State University, NIH Postdoctoral Fellow 1994-1996 Stanford University

I am a Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at North Dakota State University. My interests in teaching and research are in the area of Synthetic Organic Chemistry. I received my undergraduate degree from Olivet College, in Olivet Michigan, and completed my M.S. and Ph.D. work at Michigan State University. I spent two years as a NIH Postdoctoral Fellow in the laboratories of Prof. Barry M. Trost in Stanford. In 1996 I began my independent career at NDSU. I was promoted to Associate Professor in 2002 and became a Full Professor in 2008. I am currently serving as Chair of the department. I teach all levels of organic chemistry and organic spectroscopy. My research interests lie in the development of new synthetic methodology utilizing allyl organometallics. In particular we are interested in utilizing environmentally friendly indium and bismuth metals for enantioselective allylation reactions. More recently we have been investigating new C-H activation chemistry for the functionalization of nitrogen heterocyclic. Our methodology is applied to the synthesis of biologically active natural products and new compounds that have potential anti-cancer activity.
